Any tips on antique leather suitcase restoration?
I picked up an old suitcase from a Freecycler near where I live and have fallen in love with it. The olny problem is that it's quite a shabby thing, with water damage affecting the lining and outer leather and it now has cracks in the corners and is generally quite dirty and unloved.
I was wondering if anybody knew any good tips for restoring old cases like this - tools to use, methods etc. Or perhaps if anybody knows any good restoration workshops for this kind of thing in London or South East England?
I'm in the US but inherited a beautiful antique set of leather suitcases that needed a little restoration. Sometimes, water damage permanently damages the old lining, but sometimes you can use dry carpet cleaning granules or sponge on white vinegar to remove them. If the leather is finished, you can use saddle soap to clean and moisturize the leather, but it will darken some of the old leather so test an inconspicuous area first. If the leather is unfinished or sueded, the shoe repair shops sell a suede cleaner that will remove accumulated dirt and grime. I have also used cream cleaners and moisturizers with success and you can find them tinted if you have surface peeling or scratches or clear. Mine also had brass closures which needed a little cleaning. I used a low tack painter's tape to protect the leather surrounding them and then tediously applied Mr. Metal to the brass with a q-tip. You let it dry and then buff it off with a soft cloth. If the insides have an odor, you can crumble up newspaper or fill a container with activated charcoal, baking soda, borax, talc or even cornstarch leave it in there for a few days to absorb it.

Reupholstery - cat friendly fabric?
Hi, I purchased a beautiful but shabby and grubby looking antique tub chair from a garage sale a year ago. I haven't actually gotten around to re-upholstering it as I have been busy with other things in life. Now, we have left it in the study where it has been happily ripped to shreds by our resident cats. I am happy they are not ripping up my leather lounge set or my expensive massage chair, but it looks like I will be needing to choose some cat-friendly reupholstery material if they are to continue t his behaviour.
What do you suggest?
PS: No, don't ask me to train them not to scratch the tub chair - its the only piece of furniture in the house they scratch and I don't want training to backfire by them suddenly deciding that the leather lounge is a good place to scratch...
PS2: No, don't ask me to reupholster it with sisal rope - I am looking for a comfortable yet sturdy material that can withstand cat scratching.
PS3: They only scratch the arms.
when you do ps... then you do pps..... then you do ppps..... there is no fabric that will withstand cats....

Hi. Your best bet is to `contact the Buffalo Historical society They have excellent research facilities and should have lists of all companies doing business in Buffalo, NY at that time. Historical societies are usually very helpful, the research helps them too!

"Shabby chic" is a design style deliberately using worn and deteriorated items. The style started in Britain and evokes the type of decoration found in large country houses where there are worn and faded old chintz sofas and curtains, old paintwork and unassuming 'good' taste. The end result of shabby chic is to achieve an elegant overall effect, as opposed to the sentimentally cute 'pop-victorian.' Neither is it an expression of caring for Mother Earth values through recycling, even though recycling old furniture and fabrics is an important aspect of it.
The early forms of Shabby Chic were rather grand but the style has evolved taking inspiration from many forms of decoration. These range from 18th century Swedish painted decoration, the French Chateau as well as the American Shakers where simplicity and plainness was essential.
Shabby chic is mainly popular in interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their age and signs of wear and tear or new items are distressed to look old.
Shabby chic items are often heavily painted with many layers showing through obviously worn areas. The style is immitated by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons, with linen being particularly popular being inspired by old French linens. Whites and worn or bleached out pastels are favorite colours. Fabric is often stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style.
The term was coined by The World of Interiors magazine in the 1980s and has since been used as a name for a US company founded by Rachel Ashwell.
