chic Cottage
Would you recommend your healthy 65 year old parents consider a chic residence for active, healthy adults?
Broaching this topic with my parents is tricky. They are healthy and happy living at home, but they are not in their house often. They go the cottage in the summer, they travel in the winter. They are active, love a social life, but taking care of the house is falling on the kids and even managing their home is less interesting to them. They practically need a hotel room! Am I the only one who sees that a cool residence is a good option for 65+? What do others think?

What should I consider?
....before painting different rooms in my apartment. Suggestions on color, paint qualities, should I hire a professional? I really have little money but my apartment needs a severe makeover. My style is Cottage/Chic and simi-retro. I am leaning twards a coastal blue for the bedroom, possibly sage green for the living room and maybe a yellow in the kitchen, and a modest red in the bathroom? Help!
Consider a color scheme. Color should flow through the apartment. It should have a coordinated feel. There are several ways of achieving this. Pick an accent color that works with all the colors that you have chosen. For example, yellow would work with blue, green or red. An alternative is to chose two complimentary colors and use different shades of them throughout as wall colors or accent colors. A third option is to use shades of warm neutrals on the walls and pick bright strong accent colors in each room. That way, if you get tired of a color, accessories are cheap! Check a color wheel for even more options.
As for paint quality, consider your budget and how many years you want the paint to last. Do you own or rent? Always test the paint before you buy it. Many companies sell samples or you can always buy a quart. Paint a 10X14 (or larger) foam core board (find in art supply stores or craft shops) in each color. Prop the board up in various parts of the room/apartment (move it around) and check out the color in bright sunlight, incandescent light at night, a cloudy day etc. Keep the boards up for at least a week. You get the idea. Don't buy it until you love it! Can't decide between two shades. Paint a board for each!
Hire a professional? Depends on your budget. Painting's easy and fun, if you want to try it yourself. Have a painting party with friends. Warning! No alcohol until the painting is finished!

The band is called Car Wreck Chicken! Music from the Deep South (London).Actually, the truth is stranger than fiction – and one detail has been changed (for the purpose of art and rhyme), but the story has not.There was an awfully loud clinky, clunky, shower of broken glass and screaming metal that is part of the aural backdrop of living by that road.A cursory glance out of the window showed several cars were rather intimate and unrecognisable on the box junction. One of which was sticking its rear end out of a restaurant window. Thankfully the last diners were not sitting enjoying the view of the A23 and were further inside – and survived.The next morning, I went to my local cornershop for a pint of milk. It was just after 6am. The man was there with a neck brace on. I discovered that, after a long day (about 5.45am to midnight), he had got in his car and somehow accelerated from the side road, across the box junction and into the restaurant window. The box junction pile up had occurred right after.The cornershop man spent the night in A&E at St George’s of course and was back at work on time the next morning.Business as usual at car wreck chicken cottage as the line of the song goes.

Hi Shawn,you should check out because 1 kilo or 1 pound of fat is equal to 1 kilo or 1 pound of muscle“Muscle is heavier by volume than fat.” 1 just looks better than the other.BTW congratulations Marshall,you are an inspiration.oh and I made my own pizza Friday night using the Gallete recipe as a base with smoked chicken,cottage cheese,capsicum(red pepper)herbs and garlic with capers instead of anchovies and a few pieces of pineapple (an indiscretion I know)baked on baking paper in my frypan in a really hot oven.Yumo!

I was in the same situation as you last year. I read up on fittit, read all about Couch 2 5k, and decided it was time for change. I started running, but quickly gave up on that and signed up for the gym. I’d go almost every day, making sure I hit a whole hour on the bike, racking up what the bike’s computer claimed to be 700kCal. I would do a few weight exercises on the machines and 3×20 sets of bench presses. Then my fiancée and I got an exercise bike at home and we would pedal away hour after hour on the bike. We did this for a few months, and only managed to lose a few kg. The problem was that we were assuming we could just exercise the fat off. After all, 700 a day x 7 days a week should add up to over a pound of weight loss per week, right? I now know that even though I thought I was eating right (no junk food, whole grains, no sweetened cereal, etc.), I was grossly underestimating my daily calorie intake. What good is 700 kCal burnt on the bike, if 1L of whole milk gives you around 1000 kCal? It’s so much easier to take control of your diet than to force yourself through grueling hours of cardio. Last week, my (now) wife and I decided to try again, but to do things differently this time. We haven’t gotten back onto the bike yet, and have instead focused on our diets. We thought, “Hey, I wonder what would happen if we ditched the carbs almost completely (save for fruits and vegetables) for two weeks?”. So we read up a little about eating a low-carb diet. We went to the store, stocked up on chicken, cottage cheese, quark (high-protein white cheese, a Polish staple), tuna, and veggies. I started counting my calories religiously. I weigh practically everything. And it turned out that what I had thought was a healthy diet had actually been too much of a good thing. The whole-grain bread, cereal, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, and the occasional potatoes were all a significant daily source of calories, and although they sound like a part of a healthy and nutritious diet, they were putting us over the line, day after day. Try cutting out the carbs for two weeks. I’m pretty sure you’ll see a difference. Google a BMR calculator and set yourself a goal that’s a few hundred calories below your base metabolic rate. I’ve been aiming for 1500 for the past week, and have been trying to keep the carbohydrates down to less than 100g per day. My only source of carbs are fruits and vegetables, as well as the occasional tablespoon of natural honey. I have been surprised by the results. The most important change is that I no longer feel sudden cravings for food. I’ll eat a wholesome meal of veggies, cheese, and meat, and I’m good for a few hours. I’m not a doctor, but having read up a bit on blood sugar and carbs, I would chalk this up to my blood sugar and insulin levels stabilizing for the first time in years. The fact that high-fiber foods such as veggies take longer to digest must have something to do with it as well. I’ve gone from 162.2 kg to 158.8 since Monday. I hope to add some cardio and weightlifting in the upcoming weeks, but I now know that what they say in practically every weight-loss thread is true: losing fat is 90% diet. **TL;DR: Don’t assume that your diet is fine. It probably isn’t. Cut the carbs, write down _everything_ you eat and count your calories.**

Let me repost [something I wrote in another loseit thread I was in the same situation as you last year. I read up on fittit, read all about Couch 2 5k, and decided it was time for change. I started running, but quickly gave up on that and signed up for the gym. I’d go almost every day, making sure I hit a whole hour on the bike, racking up what the bike’s computer claimed to be 700kCal. I would do a few weight exercises on the machines and 3×20 sets of bench presses. Then my fiancée and I got an exercise bike at home and we would pedal away hour after hour on the bike. We did this for a few months, and only managed to lose a few kg. The problem was that we were assuming we could just exercise the fat off. After all, 700 a day x 7 days a week should add up to over a pound of weight loss per week, right? I now know that even though I thought I was eating right (no junk food, whole grains, no sweetened cereal, etc.), I was grossly underestimating my daily calorie intake. What good is 700 kCal burnt on the bike, if 1L of whole milk gives you around 1000 kCal? It’s so much easier to take control of your diet than to force yourself through grueling hours of cardio. Last week, my (now) wife and I decided to try again, but to do things differently this time. We haven’t gotten back onto the bike yet, and have instead focused on our diets. We thought, “Hey, I wonder what would happen if we ditched the carbs almost completely (save for fruits and vegetables) for two weeks?”. So we read up a little about eating a low-carb diet. We went to the store, stocked up on chicken, cottage cheese, quark (high-protein white cheese, a Polish staple), tuna, and veggies. I started counting my calories religiously. I weigh practically everything. And it turned out that what I had thought was a healthy diet had actually been too much of a good thing. The whole-grain bread, cereal, whole-grain pasta, brown rice, and the occasional potatoes were all a significant daily source of calories, and although they sound like a part of a healthy and nutritious diet, they were putting us over the line, day after day. Try cutting out the carbs for two weeks. I’m pretty sure you’ll see a difference. Google a BMR calculator and set yourself a goal that’s a few hundred calories below your base metabolic rate. I’ve been aiming for 1500 for the past week, and have been trying to keep the carbohydrates down to less than 100g per day. My only source of carbs are fruits and vegetables, as well as the occasional tablespoon of natural honey. I have been surprised by the results. The most important change is that I no longer feel sudden cravings for food. I’ll eat a wholesome meal of veggies, cheese, and meat, and I’m good for a few hours.
