Shabby chic question..please help?
I am trying to do my daughters room in shabby chic decor. My question is should everything be painted in bright white or can I use antique white?? I bought a can of antique white paint because it just seemed natural to use antique colors when doing a cracked shabby chic finish however all the things I have looked at online show the furniture painted in stark white. What should I do??/
Antique white would work fine for shabby chic. Just because that's what they all do doesn't mean that's what looks 'best'.

if the furniture is truly all wood, there is no problem. Just give it a good wiping down with old english or pledge. Insects can most definitely lay eggs in fabric however.

Yes, using a damp towel with an iron may work, but proceed very carefully when you try. Indents mean the wood fiber has been crushed down. The "damp" heat makes the fibers swell (like any wood exposed to moisture). But the finish put on the wood may affect the damp iron technique. Also, dents in the wood are usually a bit larger than those casued by a pen/pencil tip. If you have no luck with that, they have kits that sell different colored waxes for use on wood. Since the scartches are so thin, you could match the color with the wax. Simply rub it in until it blends; it will even fill the small crevices. Then apply some pledge or other finish. I personally would apply a paste wax and buff it out. But again, it depends on the original finish on the piece of furniture.

Why, oh why would an antiques dealer rally for visibility for fellow antique shops at the newest, most un-antique furniture chain store in the city? Doesn't make sense to me.
I agree with your mom about the Emporium. We've bought a few things there. We aren't into antiques either, in the traditional colonial sense, but we love looking for Deco style pieces to go along with our modern furniture.

Don't they use that strong, nasty coffee to clean the toilets? I hear that stuff will strip the varnish off antique furniture.

Christopher:True. The Manila Hotel in the early 1980s, through Roman Cruz and Barbara Gonzalez, were offered and sold antiques from the Yaptinchay-Yatco residence by a broker [ a certain "Mrs. B." ]. The pair of “Cristal Baccarat” chandeliers in the “sala” and the brass Victorian chandelier in the “caida” were hung in the MacArthur suite. Some furniture pieces also found their way to the same hotel suite. The chandeliers and the antique furniture have since been moved to storage by the new owner, Emilio Yap. Flora “Flory” Yaptinchay-Evangelista kept a stash of photographs of the individual contents of the house, the backsides of which were detailed, in her own hand, which piece was sold by who to whom. Sad. Those photographs are in the personal collection of Jose Ma. Ricardo “Joey” Yaptinchay-Abad Panlilio at the “Museo de La Salle” in Dasmarinas, Cavite.Toto Gonzalez

Ditto ladies! I've had this convo a few times recently as well. Things definitely change as you get older or take on a new role – wife, mother… Sometimes I chuckle at the things that I consider fun now (like a trip to the antique furniture store), and the things I thought were fun years ago. We're getting old that's for sure, but I'm sure its ok to occasional revisit the things from our youth.

Glad to see someone found the picture online. I drove down Ponce this morning looking for the building you were talking about but I couldn't find the Sarah Palin graffiti. I couldn't stop b/c they were doing construction or something and everything was crazy.
And, just on a side note, that little antique furniture store you mentioned is awesome! Everything there is lovingly renovated & restored by hand. Its a little pricey on a graduate student's budget, but hopefully one of these day's I'll be able to afford something. Oh yeah, and they have a parking lot in the back– so parking shouldn't be an issue.
