Ideas on refinishing a book shelf (sauder brand)?
It is that typical oak Sauder 3 shelve book shelf. I want to make it look distressed or shabby chic. I have read that I can lightly sand it, apply a primer and then paint,etc. Any other ideas from the yahoo crew?
Sauder likes to use MDF with a plastic veneer. MDF is basically very dense chipboard. I wouldn't really recommend trying to distress it.
However, the good news is that it can be sanded and painted. You will want to use a course grit sandpaper and do a very thorough job, or the primer and paint will just fall off when it dries. If it does, you'll need to do the project over again and again until it stays on.
If you want to go for the shabby chic look, I'd suggest 2 colors of paint and a crackle finish. Don't overdo it, just pick out a couple of areas to use the crackle finish that will give the piece some character.Paint the entire bookshelf with the first color, apply your crackle finish (as per the manufacturers instructions), then repaint the piece with the second color.
Here is something to consider before you start your project.
Something that works well with uncluttered shelves is to replace the standard cardboard backing with 1/8" plywood, sanded and painted (or papered) to match the wall. This will also strengthen the unit...
Depending on your woodworking skills, you may also consider the use of crown molding along the bottom to make the piece look like a built-in. You can also make a crown molding cap. This will change the entire look of the piece, and give it a bit of elegance.
