I like your shabby chic bird cage idea best. Also, if you have an unruly child, you could always hang him or her there for a "time out".

You might modernize your 'shabby chic' by removing some of the knick-knacks, clearing spaces. Unifying color among the smaller pieces of furniture will modernize a bit, too. Anything you can do to 'de-clutter' will help bring the room closer to neutral. (Look at texture – ruffles, stacks of items, multiple fabrics, lots of colors — all add visual complexity).
The modern furniture can be softened by adding texture or color. Add a soft throw blanket (a solid color from the floral couch) diagonally over the modern couch — making it more welcoming.
