shabby chic furniture painting
has anyone got any tips on painting furniture shabby chic style?
I have been selling oak furniture and a lot of people have suggested painting it as there is more of a demand for 'shabby chic'. I was wondering if i was supposed to sand down the furniture first and if there was any special paint to use? would like it to be simple as possible and would appreciate any ideas thank you
Sorry to say, creating a shabby chick look from raw furniture is not going to be quite as simple as you hope, but, the results will be fabulous. Be sure to add the cost of your time and materials to the selling price. Also, you can take cheaper, raw pine furniture and probably still get the same price as you would for oak.
If the wood is raw (no finish) only a light sanding with a fine grit is needed (just to make sure everything is smooth.) If there is a finish, you might need to remove the finish (sand lightly and test a little paint in one area to see if the finish needs removing -- if the paint flakes or rubs off after drying, you need to deal with the finish), and then sand (as the wood grain will be raised after stripping.)
You can do a a one- or two-step paint. In a two-step, use a pale subtle color underneath (gray, pink, blue, pale yellow, sage), or rich color (burnt umber, clay red/burnt sienna, ocher, charcoal, moss green -- avoid anything too bright like cobalt blue, Christmas green, or vermilion, orange, etc.) and then top with an antique, creamy white color, in a latex semi-gloss (what you might use for your kitchen or bath -- it will wear and probably adhere better) and then wipe off and lightly sand areas that would normally be subject to wear (you can sand to the under color and/or down to the wood). Finish with a glaze or a light coat of Golden Oak stain (ZAR is my favorite - is thick, rich, is consistent in color from batch to batch, and lasts longer than Minwax), wiping gently. allowing some places to keep the stain, other places not, and then seal with a non-yellowing lacquer or water-based poly if so desired (a good idea for table or dresser tops, but not really necessary for seating).
You also might want to pick up some furniture pieces from thrift stores or tag sales or even the recycling center to practice on (and then resell when they turn out fabulous, as I know they will). If they are already painted, you're half-way there! Just sand lightly and commence with your top color, and continue on.

Should I go pale pink and green in my living room?
Ok here is the situation. I have had a shabby chic style house with all white furniture for about 5 years now. When we first did it - we used the pale pink and pale green accents with the white furniture including floral pink pillows etc., well about 2 years ago I switched to periwinkle blue accents with the same furniture. A few of my friends said they liked the blue better. My husband and I both like either the pink or the blue since he's a fan of the shabby chic style as well. Lately, I've wanted to go back to the pale pink and green just because I feel the might be more of a cheery "cottagey" colors. This would involve painting all the flowers I have painted on my furniture pink again and some of my nick-knacks. However, I still love periwinkle blue. I don't want to attempt to mix both periwinkle blue and pink - it would be too much work. What is everyone's opinion? I know it's up to what I like but sometimes some other people's feedback helps.
I would leave it alone. You don't want to attempt to mix periwinkle blue and pink due to the work, and remember: you love that periwinkle. You don't want to lose it so leave it be. Have a beautiful day, btw.
